Cycling in Jávea is genuinely one of the best ways to explore this corner of the Costa Blanca — and September is, without question, the finest month to do it. The August crowds have melted away, temperatures have dropped to a civilised 26–28°C, and the roads around Cap de Sant Antoni and the Montgó Natural Park are almost blissfully quiet. I've been cycling these roads for a decade and I still feel a little smug every time I crest a hill and get that first glimpse of the turquoise bay below.
Whether you're a serious road cyclist looking to clock serious kilometres through the mountains, a casual rider who just wants to pedal from the old town to the port with a cold Estrella waiting at the other end, or a family wanting a gentle ride along the seafront at La Grava, Jávea delivers. Here's everything you need to know.
The Best Cycling Routes in Jávea
1. Cap de Sant Antoni — The Classic (12 km loop, moderate)
This is the route I'd recommend to almost anyone visiting Jávea for the first time on a bike. Starting from the Arenal beach area, you head north along the coast road past the lighthouse at Cap de Sant Antoni — the most easterly point of the Spanish mainland, fact fans — before looping back through the vineyards and pine forest toward the port. The road surface is good, the gradient is manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, and the views over the Balearic Sea toward Ibiza (visible on a clear day) are absolutely worth every uphill metre. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours including time to stop for photos.

2. Montgó Foothills Loop — The Challenge (28 km, strenuous)
For experienced cyclists, the route that climbs into the foothills beneath Montgó mountain is the one that separates the cyclists from the Sunday riders. Starting from the old town (el Poble), you head west through the residential areas of La Lluca and Balcons al Mar, climbing steadily with the limestone face of Montgó looming above you. The descent toward Dénia on the far side offers 3 km of pure, sweeping joy before you turn back along the valley floor toward Jávea. Total elevation gain is around 650 metres — respectable, but nothing that'll break a fit rider. Dénia's market street makes a good halfway café stop if you time it right.
3. Port to Arenal Coastal Flat Ride — The Easy Option (6 km one way, easy)
This is the one for families, beginners, and anyone who fancies a sunset ride with a glass of rosé as the reward. The flat coastal road connecting Jávea's port area to the Arenal beach runs along some genuinely beautiful stretches of coastline, passing the small rocky coves at La Grava and Cala Blanca. There's a dedicated bike lane for much of the route. It's perfectly manageable on a standard hybrid or even an e-bike if you want zero effort. The kids will love it, and so will you.
4. Jávea to Moraira via Benitatxell (45 km round trip, moderate-strenuous)
This is my personal favourite — a longer road that takes you south through the white hilltop village of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, with its jaw-dropping views from the Cumbre del Sol development down to the coast, before descending into the smart marina town of Moraira. Grab a coffee at one of the waterfront cafés in Moraira, then decide whether to tackle the return climb or arrange a pickup. The road quality is excellent throughout and traffic is light, especially mid-week in September.
Where to Hire a Bike in Jávea
Jávea Bikes (near the Arenal beach area) is the most established hire shop and stocks a solid range of road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrids, and e-bikes. Daily rental starts at around €18 for a hybrid, €28 for a road bike, and €35–45 for a quality e-bike. They also provide helmets, locks, and route maps — ask for the Cap de Sant Antoni circuit when you go in.
Bicis Jávea near the port area is another reliable option with competitive pricing, particularly for multi-day rentals. If you're staying for a week and planning to cycle several times, negotiate — they're usually flexible.

Getting to the Start Points
Jávea's three distinct zones — old town, port, and Arenal — are all connected but spread over several kilometres. The old town is the better starting point for the Montgó foothills loop.
What to Bring
In September, it's still warm enough that you'll need factor 30+ sunscreen even on a morning ride. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person — the stretch between Cap de Sant Antoni and the port has no fountains. A basic repair kit (tyre levers, a tube, mini pump) is worth throwing in a jersey pocket if you're heading into the hills. The roads are generally well-maintained but there are occasional patches of gravel near the Montgó trails.
Cycling with Kids in Jávea
The coastal flat route between the port and Arenal is genuinely child-friendly and a lovely activity for families. Most hire shops have children's bikes from age 5 upwards, plus tag-along trailers and child seats for smaller ones. E-bikes are a brilliant option if you want to keep pace with enthusiastic kids without arriving at the beach a sweaty wreck.

Lower temperatures, quieter roads, golden light, and the vineyards in the foothills beginning to turn amber as harvest season approaches.
