Why stay in Jávea?

Jávea – also known by its Valencian name Xàbia – is one of the most captivating destinations on the Costa Blanca. Nestled between the dramatic headlands of Cabo de San Antonio to the north and Cabo de la Nao to the south, this charming town on the Alicante coast perfectly blends a medieval old town, a working fishing harbour and some of the most beautiful beaches and coves in the entire Mediterranean.

Jávea's coastline is remarkable in its variety. The Arenal beach stretches along a golden sandy bay lined with a lively promenade, making it perfect for families and sunseekers. Just a short drive away, the sheltered cove of La Granadella is framed by pine-covered cliffs and boasts crystal-clear turquoise water that is ideal for snorkelling and diving. Near the port, La Grava beach offers a more local atmosphere where fresh fish is landed daily and the seafood restaurants serve some of the finest rice dishes on the coast.

The old town rewards visitors who take the time to wander its narrow streets of local sandstone. The 16th-century fortress church of San Bartolomé dominates the historic centre, and the bustling Thursday market draws locals and visitors alike with its fresh produce, artisan goods and regional specialities. The port district buzzes with life into the early hours and offers a wide choice of restaurants where paella, arroz a banda and salt-baked fish are house specialities worth travelling for.

For nature lovers, the Montgó Natural Park is an absolute highlight. Rising sharply behind the town, this vast protected massif provides superb hiking trails with sweeping views across the sea towards Ibiza on a clear day. The park is home to rich Mediterranean flora, nesting birds of prey and prehistoric cave paintings that add a fascinating historical dimension to any walk.

With more than 300 days of sunshine per year and mild winters sheltered by the Cabo de la Nao, Jávea enjoys one of the healthiest microclimates in Europe. Whether you visit in the height of summer or prefer the peaceful charm of the shoulder season, Jávea delivers an authentic and deeply relaxing Spanish coastal experience that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

Things to do in Jávea

Arenal Beach

Jávea's most iconic beach stretches for over a kilometre along a sheltered bay, backed by a vibrant promenade lined with restaurants, beach bars and water-sports hire. The calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families, while kayaking, paddle boarding and pedalos keep active visitors entertained throughout the day.

La Granadella Cove

Widely regarded as one of the finest coves on the entire Valencian coast, La Granadella sits at the foot of pine-clad cliffs and offers strikingly clear turquoise water that is perfect for snorkelling and diving. A small beachside restaurant serves excellent fresh seafood and rice dishes, making it a wonderful spot to spend a full lazy day.

Montgó Natural Park

Rising dramatically behind the town to a height of 753 metres, the Montgó massif is a protected natural park shared between Jávea and neighbouring Dénia. Well-marked hiking trails wind past prehistoric cave paintings, aromatic Mediterranean scrubland and rocky outcrops that reward walkers with breathtaking views stretching as far as Ibiza on a clear day.

San Bartolomé Fortress Church

Standing proudly at the heart of Jávea's medieval old town, this remarkable 16th-century Gothic-Levantine church was built from the distinctive local sandstone known as tosca and designed to double as a fortified refuge during pirate raids. The interior houses fine religious artworks and the surrounding old-town streets are perfect for an afternoon of leisurely exploration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to visit Jávea?

Jávea enjoys a superb microclimate year-round with over 300 days of sunshine, but the shoulder months of May, June and September offer the ideal balance of warm weather, calm seas and far fewer crowds than the peak August season. Winter is mild and peaceful, making Jávea a popular choice for longer stays and remote workers seeking sunshine outside the summer rush.

How far is Jávea from the nearest airport?

Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC) is approximately 100 km from Jávea, around a one-hour drive along the AP-7 motorway, and offers the widest choice of international flights. Valencia Airport (VLC) is slightly further at around 110 km but is also a convenient option, especially for travellers from northern Europe. Car hire is available at both airports and is strongly recommended for exploring the area.

Cabo de la Nao

The easternmost point of Alicante province offers some of the most dramatic coastal scenery on the Costa Blanca, with sheer cliffs plunging into deep blue water and sweeping views towards Ibiza on clear days. The area around the headland is dotted with hidden coves including the spectacular Cala del Portichol, and the winding cliff road itself is a scenic highlight.

Hiring a car is strongly recommended, as Jávea is spread across three distinct areas – the old town, the port and El Arenal – which are each several kilometres apart. A local bus service connects the main zones but runs infrequently. Long-distance buses link Jávea with Alicante, Valencia and neighbouring towns such as Dénia and Calpe several times daily.
