Everyone heads to Las Marinas or Las Rotas (the tourist spelling). But walk south past the last car park at Les Rotes, past the point where the tarmac ends, and you'll find a series of flat limestone ledges and tiny natural pools that barely anyone visits before 11am. Bring water shoes, a snorkel, and a bocadillo. The underwater scenery here — purple sea urchins, schools of bream, and the occasional octopus — rivals anything you'd pay 40€ to see on a boat trip. I've been coming here for years and I've never needed to queue for a spot.
Tip: Park at the end of Camí de les Rotes and walk south for about 12 minutes. There are no facilities, so bring everything you need.

Dénia's fishing port has a small fish auction (the llonja) that operates Monday to Friday, but Wednesday mornings are when the catch is particularly impressive, especially in September when the gamba roja — Dénia's famous red prawn — is at its best. It's small compared to the Coves d'en Colom in Xàbia, but the stalactite formations are extraordinary, and guided tours run most mornings for just 4-5€ per person. Perfect for a September morning when it's already 28°C outside and you want somewhere cool.

4. Bar El Pelayo — Where the Fishermen Actually Go
There are plenty of tapas bars in Dénia's old town, but Bar El Pelayo near the fishing port is where the people who catch the fish go for their morning coffee and tostada. It's not pretty — plastic chairs, a TV showing football, and a handwritten menu — but the tortilla de patatas is made fresh every morning and costs 2.50€ a slice. Go at 8am and you'll sit alongside men in rubber boots who've been at sea since 4am. It's as authentic as Dénia gets.

5. The Montgó Natural Park — Beyond the Main Trail
Most guides send you up the main Montgó trail from the Dénia side, which ends at the summit with views to Ibiza on clear days. But the Camí de la Colònia trail, which loops around the northern flank of the mountain, is almost always empty and passes through a landscape of wild rosemary, ancient almond terraces, and ruined farmhouses that nobody has tended for fifty years. In September, the light is golden and the heat manageable before 9am. Allow 2.5 hours and take 1.5 litres of water minimum.

6. Dénia's Forgotten Neighbourhood: El Fortí
Between the castle hill and the port, most tourists follow the main pedestrian street. But turn right up any of the steep lanes behind the castle walls and you'll find El Fortí, a cluster of old whitewashed houses with wooden balconies, bougainvillea, and cats sleeping on windowsills. There's a tiny square with a bench and a view over the port that I genuinely consider one of the most peaceful spots on the Costa Blanca. No bar, no shop — just the sound of the sea and someone's washing on the line. Visit in the evening when the light is amber.

7. La Pedrera Beach — The One Nobody Googles
If I tell too many people about this one, I'll regret it. La Pedrera is a small pebble-and-sand beach about 4km south of Dénia's main beach zone, accessible via a short dirt track off the CV-736. In high summer it gets a handful of local families; in September you may have it almost to yourself. The water is crystal clear, there's natural shade from the low cliffs, and the snorkelling on the rocky reef at the southern end is genuinely excellent. There are no facilities at all — that's the point.

8. The Sunday Market in Ondara
Just 8km inland from Dénia, the market in Ondara on Sunday mornings is about as far from the tourist circuit as you can get in this area. Local farmers sell tomatoes, peppers, fresh cheese, and dried figs; there are stalls of second-hand tools, baby clothes, and inexplicable mechanical parts. I once bought a basket of ripe figs for 1.50€ and ate them for lunch with some local cheese from the next stall. It's messy, loud, and completely wonderful. Go early (8am-12pm) and drive — there's no bus.
