Dénia vs Jávea vs Calpe: Which Costa Blanca Town Should You Choose for Your Holiday?

If you've been researching a holiday on the Costa Blanca, you've almost certainly ended up down the rabbit hole of comparing Dénia vs Jávea vs Calpe. All three are genuinely wonderful — I've spent the better part of a decade living in this corner of Spain, and I still think they're the three best towns on the northern Costa Blanca. But they're also surprisingly different, and choosing the wrong one for your travel style can genuinely affect how much you enjoy your trip.

So let me give you the honest comparison — from someone who's driven every road, swum every beach, and argued about this in more than a few Spanish bars.

The Vibe: What Kind of Holiday Do You Want?

Dénia is the one that surprises people most. It's bigger than you'd expect — a proper working Spanish town with around 45,000 residents — and it has an energy that the others simply can't match. There's a real vida local here: covered markets, a bustling old town beneath a Moorish castle, a ferry port connecting to Ibiza and Mallorca, and a gastronomy scene so respected it's been called the "Capital of Gastronomy" of the Mediterranean. In September especially, with the summer crowds thinning, Dénia feels absolutely perfect. Local life reasserts itself, the restaurants are still buzzing, and the beaches are still warm.

Jávea (Xàbia) is probably the most naturally beautiful of the three. Tucked between the Montgó mountain and the Cap de la Nau headland, it has a fragmented layout — the old town, the port, and the beach area are all separate — which gives it an almost rural feel despite its popularity. The water at Cala Granadella and Portitxol is honestly some of the clearest I've ever swum in. Jávea attracts a slightly more outdoorsy crowd: hikers, divers, and people who want to escape the world.

Calpe is the one dominated by the Peñón de Ifach — that dramatic 332-metre rock jutting into the sea. It's unmistakable on the skyline and gives the town a postcard quality that makes it incredibly photogenic. Calpe has more of a traditional resort feel than the other two, with a longer stretch of sandy beach, more English-speaking bars (if that matters to you), and a very well-developed tourist infrastructure. It can get busy in summer, but September is a lovely time to visit.

Beaches: Who Wins?

This is where it gets interesting. All three have beaches, but they're completely different.

Dénia has arguably the most variety. Las Rotas is a rocky cove area in the south with crystal water and a natural marine reserve — snorkelling here is genuinely spectacular. Las Marinas to the north is a long sweep of sandy beach, calmer and perfect for families. In total you've got around 20km of coastline, split roughly between sandy and rocky. For my money, Las Rotas on a September morning — nearly empty, water still at 26°C — is as good as it gets anywhere on the coast.

Jávea wins on raw beauty. The beaches are mostly rocky or pebbly, which keeps the crowds down, and the water clarity at spots like Cala Granadella is extraordinary. The main sandy beach (Arenal) is pleasant but unremarkable. If you're a snorkeller or diver, Jávea probably edges it.

Calpe has the best sandy beaches of the three — Playa Arenal-Bol and Playa La Fosa are wide, long, and well-serviced. If you have young children who want to splash in flat water and build sandcastles, Calpe might actually win.

Food & Drink: The Gastronomic Verdict

No contest: Dénia wins. This isn't just local pride — it's a UNESCO-recognised truth. The town's red prawns (gambas rojas de Dénia) are considered among the finest seafood in Europe, and there are two Michelin-starred restaurants here (El Poblet and Quique Dacosta's mothership, just outside town). Even a simple menú del día at a harbour-side restaurant will involve locally caught fish cooked with real care.

Jávea has some very decent restaurants, particularly around the port, and a few good market days. Calpe has more tourist-facing dining — perfectly enjoyable, but not the same depth of culinary culture.

Getting There & Getting Around

All three are accessible from Alicante Airport (around 90 minutes by road) or Valencia Airport (about an hour to Dénia). What makes Dénia unique is that it's the only one with a ferry to the Balearic Islands — Baleàlia and Trasmediterranea both run routes to Ibiza and Mallorca, which makes it a brilliant base if you want to island-hop.

Calpe and Jávea are both served by the TRAM light railway from Alicante, which is a lovely journey up the coast. Dénia is the northern terminus of the TRAM line, so you can actually ride the whole route from Alicante for about €5. For getting around locally, a hire car opens everything up — especially in Jávea where the different núcleos are spread out.

Who Should Choose What?

Choose Dénia if: You want a real Spanish town experience, great food, beach variety, good transport links, and a lively autumn atmosphere. Ideal for couples, food lovers, and anyone who wants to combine beach time with genuine cultural exploration.
