After a decade of living on the Costa Blanca, people ask me the same question over and over: when is the best time to visit Dénia? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what kind of holiday you're after. Dénia is one of those rare places that genuinely works in every season — but each month has its own personality, its own crowd level, and its own price tag. Here's my honest, lived-in guide to help you choose the right time to book.
The Climate in Dénia: What You Need to Know First
Dénia sits on the northern Costa Blanca, just below the Montgó mountain, which creates a microclimate that's slightly different from places like Benidorm further south. The summers are hot and dry, winters are mild (rarely dropping below 8°C), spring and autumn are genuinely lovely, and even January can throw you a 19°C surprise. Annual sunshine hours sit around 3,000 — one of the highest in Europe.
Rainfall is low but not zero. September and October see the most precipitation, occasionally in the form of dramatic DANA storms (the Mediterranean's version of a flash flood event). These pass quickly but are worth knowing about.

January & February — The Quiet Season
Air temperatures hover around 15-17°C, sea temperature is around 14°C (too cold for most swimmers). The town is genuinely quiet, prices for holiday rentals in Dénia drop significantly, and you'll find parking everywhere, tables at every restaurant, and the castle almost to yourself. The Tuesday and Saturday markets are still running. February brings almond blossom to the Montgó foothills — genuinely beautiful walking conditions.
Who should come: walkers, cyclists, anyone doing the Montgó hike, couples who want a peaceful escape.
March & April — Spring Warmth Arrives
This is arguably the most underrated time to visit. Temperatures climb to 18-22°C, the sea is still cool for swimming (around 16-17°C), but the light is extraordinary. The Montgó turns green, wildflowers carpet the hillsides, and Las Rotas beach — normally packed in summer — is practically empty on a Tuesday morning.
Semana Santa (Easter week) is the exception: Dénia fills up fast, there are processions and festivities worth seeing, but book early. Outside of Easter, April is almost perfect.
May & Early June — Peak Sweet Spot
May is, personally, my favourite month in Dénia. Temperatures are consistently 22-26°C, the sea reaches a swimmable 20°C by late May, the tourist season hasn't fully kicked in, and the town has an energy that feels like everyone's in a good mood. The chiringuitos (beach bars) are opening up, restaurant terraces are packed with locals, and the famous Dénia prawn season is in full swing.
June carries this energy forward. By mid-June you have 28-30°C days, sea temperatures around 23°C, and the summer festival calendar starting to warm up. Browse our available apartments in Dénia for June — it's still easier to find great availability than July or August.
July & August — High Summer
Let's be honest: this is the busiest, hottest, and most expensive time to visit. Temperatures regularly hit 33-36°C, the sea is a beautiful 26-27°C bath, and Dénia's population multiplies several times over with Spanish families, northern European visitors, and people doing the ferry crossing to Ibiza and Mallorca.
The energy is fantastic if you like a lively atmosphere — evening paseos, live music, ice cream queues at Cas Pobil at midnight, the Bous a la Mar festival in late July (bulls in the sea, uniquely Dénia). But you need to book early, budget more, and accept that Platja Les Marines will be packed.
One tip I always give: if you must come in August, rent an apartment rather than a hotel. You'll save money, have your own kitchen for the scorching midday hours, and booking direct with JV Properties saves you up to 18% compared to Airbnb or Booking.com — that matters a lot when August prices are already high.
September — The Local's Favourite
The sea is still 25-26°C warm, temperatures drop to a more comfortable 26-28°C, the crowds thin out dramatically after the Spanish school year starts on September 8-10, and the whole town exhales. Restaurant reservations are easy again. Prices fall. The light turns golden.
There's a catch: September can bring one or two heavy rain events (DANA storms). They're usually over within 24 hours, but it's worth knowing. Overall, September is exceptional value and arguably the best beach weather of the year — warm sea, warm air, half the people.
October & November — Autumn Colour
October is genuinely wonderful for anyone who isn't solely there for beach swimming. Air temperatures are 20-24°C, perfect for cycling the Dénia-Oliva greenway, hiking the Montgó, or exploring the old town and castle without sweating. The Montgó fig season has just finished but the landscape is stunning.
November is quieter still — the town switches to local mode, many beach restaurants close, but the permanent restaurants (try Els Magazinos or L'Ecohuerta for something special) are all open and often easier to get a table at.
December — Christmas on the Costa Blanca
Dénia does Christmas in a properly Spanish way: the main street lights up beautifully, the Christmas market runs on the paseo, and December 28 brings the famous Nit de l'Albà — a massive fireworks and firecracker street festival that's been going for decades and is absolutely not to be missed if you're here. Temperatures are 14-17°C, more like a mild British spring than a northern European winter.
