Calpe vs Benidorm: Which Costa Blanca Resort Is Right for You?

3 June 2026

Home›Blog›Calpe vs Benidorm: Which Costa Blanca Resort Is Right for You?

If you're planning a holiday on the Costa Blanca and you've narrowed it down to Calpe vs Benidorm, you're already asking the right question. These two towns sit just 30 kilometres apart on the same gorgeous coastline, yet they couldn't feel more different. I've lived here for a decade, and I get asked this comparison almost every week. Here's my honest take — no marketing spin, just the real difference between the two.

The Vibe: Authentic Fishing Village vs Party Skyline

Let's start with atmosphere, because it shapes everything else.

Calpe is anchored by the Peñón de Ifach — a 332-metre limestone rock that juts out of the sea like something from another planet. The old town, Ifach village, still has cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and a genuine working fishing port where you can watch the catch come in at dawn. In June, the town hums with energy but never overwhelms. You can walk from a busy beach bar to a quiet cala in twenty minutes.

Benidorm, on the other hand, is Spain's answer to a mini Manhattan — skyscrapers right on the beach, two enormous sandy bays (Playa de Levante and Playa de Poniente), and a nightlife scene that runs 24/7. That's not a criticism — for some travellers, that energy is exactly what they want. Benidorm is also outstanding value and brilliantly set up for large groups.

But if you want a holiday that feels like Spain rather than a holiday resort, Calpe wins every time.

Beaches: Quality vs Quantity

Benidorm's beaches are genuinely impressive. Playa de Levante is over two kilometres long and immaculately maintained. You'll have no trouble finding a sunbed, a cocktail or a jet ski rental.

Calpe's beaches are smaller but more varied and, in my opinion, more beautiful. Playa Arenal-Bol is the main sandy beach, sheltered and calm — perfect for families with young children. A short walk south gets you to Playa La Fossa, a longer stretch with cleaner water and more space. And then there are the calas — hidden rocky coves like Cala del Mallorquí and Cala de la Manzanera — that you simply don't get in Benidorm. In June the water temperature hits around 22-23°C: warm enough to swim all day.

Food: Night and Day

This is where Calpe really pulls ahead for me. The restaurant scene here punches way above its weight. Casa del Maco, Peix & Brases (try their rice dishes — genuinely world-class) and the fish market chiringuitos along La Fossa serve fresh seafood that would cost triple in a city. The Tuesday and Friday mercado near the port is worth building your morning around.

Benidorm has good food too, especially if you explore beyond the main drag — but the sheer volume of all-inclusive hotels means the culinary culture is more diluted. If eating well matters to you, Calpe is the clear winner.

Getting There and Getting Around

Both towns are easy to reach from Alicante Airport (ALC) — about 75 minutes to Calpe, 55 minutes to Benidorm, both by hire car on the AP-7 toll motorway. The TRAM rail service connects Benidorm to Alicante more easily than Calpe, which makes Benidorm better for those arriving without a car.

In Calpe, a car or scooter helps for exploring the calas and inland villages. Parking in June is manageable — the Parking del Puerto near the fish market is my go-to — but arrive before 10am in peak summer.

Accommodation: Self-Catering vs Hotels

Benidorm is dominated by large hotels and all-inclusive resorts. Calpe has a much stronger self-catering culture — villas and apartments with private pools, sea-view terraces and full kitchens. For families and couples who want space, privacy and the freedom to cook fresh market produce, a holiday rental in Calpe is transformative.

And here's something worth knowing: booking your Calpe holiday rental direct through JV Properties saves you up to 18% compared to what you'd pay on Airbnb or Booking.com, because there are no platform fees. That's a significant saving on a two-week stay — money better spent at Peix & Brases.

Browse our current availability in Calpe — we have everything from studio apartments near Arenal-Bol to four-bedroom villas with infinity pools overlooking the Peñón.

Who Should Choose Benidorm?

  • Large groups who want maximum nightlife and entertainment
  • Budget travellers who want to keep costs rock-bottom
  • Visitors without a car who need easy transport links
  • People who love big, buzzy beaches with lots of facilities

Who Should Choose Calpe?

  • Couples wanting a romantic, characterful base
  • Families with children who want calm water and safe, walkable streets
  • Foodies and anyone who wants to eat like a local
  • Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts (the Peñón de Ifach and the Sierra Helada are both accessible from Calpe)
  • Anyone who wants an authentic Costa Blanca experience rather than a purpose-built resort

My Honest Verdict

After ten years living here, my answer is almost always Calpe — unless someone specifically tells me they want the Benidorm experience. Calpe has that rare quality of a town that still belongs to the people who live there, not just the tourists passing through. The Peñón is free to hike. The fish market sells langoustines at honest prices. Old men play dominoes in the plaza at dusk while kids kick footballs nearby.

In June especially, Calpe is close to perfect. The summer crowds haven't fully arrived, the sea is warm, the evenings are long and golden, and you can get a table at the best restaurants without booking three weeks ahead.

If that sounds like your kind of holiday, start planning your Calpe trip here — and remember, booking direct always beats booking through a platform.
