Calpe nightlife gets unfairly overlooked. Most travel guides mention the Peñón de Ifach and the beaches, then go quiet — as if the fun stops when the sun dips behind the rock. But after ten years living here on the Costa Blanca, I can tell you that Calpe after dark has a personality all of its own. It's not Benidorm — and that's entirely the point.
Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic sunset cocktail, a group of friends after something livelier, or a family wanting a relaxed evening stroll with dinner and ice cream, Calpe delivers. Here's where to go, what to expect, and how to make the most of your evenings in one of the Costa Blanca's most genuinely charming towns.
The Golden Hour: Sunset Spots You'll Never Forget
Before we even get to bars, let's talk about the sunset ritual — because in Calpe, this is practically a religion.

Find rentals →The western-facing stretch of Playa de la Fossa (Levante) is your best bet for watching the sun sink over the mountains behind the town. Grab a spot at one of the chiringuitos around 8pm in June (sunset is around 9:15pm) and order a cold Estrella Damm or a tinto de verano. The light turns the Peñón de Ifach gold. It's genuinely stunning and costs you about €3.
For an elevated view — literally — head up to the Mirador del Peñón, the lookout point on the north side of the rock. It's a short walk from the old town and gives you panoramic views over both bays. Perfect for couples, perfect for photos, and completely free.
The Paseo: Calpe's Evening Ritual
The Spanish concept of the paseo — the evening stroll — is alive and well in Calpe. Between 8pm and 10pm, the Avenida de Gabriel Miró (the main drag running parallel to Playa de la Fossa) fills up with families, couples, and groups wandering between ice cream shops, restaurants, and terrace bars.
This is the heart of Calpe's social scene, and it's enormously enjoyable even if you don't drink. The atmosphere is relaxed, multi-generational, and very Spanish. Don't skip it.
Where to Drink: The Best Bars in Calpe
El Rincón del Puerto — Down near the fishing harbour, this is one of my favourite spots for an early evening beer. It's unpretentious, the locals drink here, and the views of the fishing boats are lovely. Order the house vermouth if they have it.
La Bodeguita de Calpe — A wine bar in the old town (Casco Antiguo) that punches well above its size. They stock a serious selection of Spanish wines — Ribera del Duero, Priorat, local Alicante DO bottles — and the charcuterie boards are excellent. Arrive before 9:30pm or you won't get a table.
Chiringuito La Fossa — Right on the beach at Levante, this chiringuito transforms into a proper cocktail bar after 9pm on summer evenings. The mojitos are generous, the music is chilled, and your feet are practically in the sand. This is where the holiday feeling really kicks in.
Bar Tropical — On the Avenida Gabriel Miró, this is a no-nonsense bar with outdoor seating, cold beer, and friendly staff. Popular with a mixed crowd of locals and holidaymakers. Good for people-watching.
Kalua Calpe — For those who want something a bit more nightclub-adjacent, Kalua is the most established late-night venue in Calpe. It's not enormous, it's not Ibiza, but it gets going after midnight in summer and plays a mix of pop and commercial dance. Dress code is smart-casual.
The Old Town at Night
Calpe's Casco Antiguo (old quarter) is genuinely atmospheric after dark, especially in June when the heat of the day has faded and the narrow streets cool down. The Plaza del Mosquit is the social hub — surrounded by restaurants and bars with outdoor tables, it gets lively around 9–10pm.
Walk up through the old Moorish walls, past the 15th-century Iglesia Antigua, and you'll find several small terrace bars tucked into the hillside. This area is more local, quieter, and far more characterful than the seafront strip. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Calpe rather than just a generic beach resort.
Evening Activities Beyond Drinking
Calpe's evenings aren't just about bars. In June, the longer days mean you can still enjoy outdoor activities well into the evening:
- Evening kayaking — Several operators on Playa de la Fossa offer guided sunset kayak tours around the base of the Peñón. The rock glows amber in the evening light. Usually around €25–30pp, book in advance.
- Night fishing from the pier — The long pier at the port is free to walk along, and local fishermen set up from early evening. It's atmospheric and oddly relaxing.
- Open-air cinema — Calpe runs an outdoor film screening series in summer (check the Ajuntament de Calp website for dates). Usually held in the municipal park area, it's cheap, casual, and very Spanish.
- Flamenco shows — A couple of restaurants in and around the old town put on live flamenco evenings in summer. Ask at your accommodation or check local noticeboards.
Practical Tips for Calpe Nights
Eating times matter. Don't even think about dinner before 9pm if you want to eat where locals eat. Most restaurants don't really get going until 9:30–10pm in summer. Lunch is 2–4pm. Adjust your body clock by day two and you'll be fine.
Getting around at night is easy on foot if you're staying near the seafront or old town. If you're further out, taxis are cheap and plentiful. The Calpe taxi rank is near the bus station on Avenida de la Marina.
Noise levels: Calpe is considerably quieter than Benidorm or Dénia. The late-night scene is concentrated on a small area near Levante beach and the old town. If your holiday rental is more than 10 minutes' walk from the centre, you'll sleep fine.
Stay Close to the Action
If you're planning a trip to Calpe and want to make the most of the evening scene, location matters. Staying near Playa de la Fossa or the old town puts you within walking distance of everything mentioned above.

The Honest Verdict
Calpe's nightlife won't suit everyone, and it's not trying to. If you want pumping clubs and 24-hour entertainment, head to Benidorm (20 minutes down the motorway). But if you want long, lazy evenings with excellent food and wine, magical sunsets, atmospheric old-town bars, and the kind of night where you wander home at 1am having had a brilliant time without really trying — Calpe is hard to beat.
I've been doing it for ten years and I still look forward to every evening here.
