Hiking in Calpe: The Best Walks & Trails Including the Peñón de Ifach (2026 Guide)

15 June 2026

Home›Blog›Hiking in Calpe: The Best Walks & Trails Including the Peñón de Ifach (2026 Guide)

If you think Calpe is just about beaches and sangria — and I completely understand why — you're missing something that honestly blew me away when I first arrived here ten years ago. Hiking in Calpe is some of the best on the entire Costa Blanca, and the trails range from a gentle morning stroll along the salt lagoon to a proper knee-burning scramble up one of Spain's most iconic rocks. Whether you're a serious hiker or someone who just wants a nice walk before lunch, this guide covers every route worth knowing.

June is actually a brilliant month to hike here. Yes, it gets warm — we're talking 28–32°C by afternoon — but start early (I mean early, before 9am) and the trails are quiet, the light is golden, and the views over the bay are worth every sweaty step.

The Peñón de Ifach: Calpe's Most Iconic Hike

Let's start with the big one. The Peñón de Ifach is a 332-metre limestone monolith that juts straight out of the sea and dominates every view of Calpe. It's protected as a Natural Park, and the summit trail is one of the most dramatic short hikes in the whole of Spain.

The basics: - Distance: 3.5 km return - Elevation gain: 320 metres - Time: 2–2.5 hours return - Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (there's a tunnel and some scrambling near the top) - Start point: Visitor Centre car park at the base of the rock — pay parking, around €2–3/hour

The trail starts gently through Mediterranean scrubland — wild rosemary, lentisk, dwarf fan palms — before passing through a tunnel blasted into the rock in the 1970s. After the tunnel, the path gets steeper and more exposed. There are fixed chains and handrails near the summit, which you'll absolutely want to use.

At the top: 360-degree views of the Calpe bay, the Salinas salt lagoon, the Montgó mountain to the north, and on clear days, all the way to Ibiza. It's genuinely jaw-dropping.

Practical tips: - Entrance is free but numbers are limited — arrive before 9am in summer to avoid queues or being turned back - Bring at least 1.5 litres of water, sun cream, and proper footwear (trainers are fine, but flip-flops are a bad idea) - Dogs are not permitted on the trail - The visitor centre has toilets and basic info — check current opening times before you go

The Salinas de Calpe: A Flat, Easy Walk for Everyone

If scaling a rock face isn't your idea of a holiday, the Salinas de Calpe walk is the perfect alternative. This easy, flat circuit around the protected salt lagoon takes about 45 minutes to an hour and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels — including buggies if the ground is dry.

The lagoon sits between the Peñón and Playa de la Fossa, and it's genuinely beautiful in the early morning. In summer you'll spot flamingos wading in the shallows — a sight that never gets old, even after a decade. The path is unpaved in sections but easy to follow, and there are information boards about the birdlife and the lagoon's ecology.

Go at sunrise or in the late afternoon for the best light and the coolest temperatures.

Caminito del Toix: Coastal Clifftop Drama

This is my personal favourite walk near Calpe and one that far too few visitors know about. The Caminito del Toix (also called the Cap de la Nau Nord route) is a coastal clifftop path that runs along the headland between Calpe and Altea, with vertiginous drops straight down to the sea and views that genuinely stop you in your tracks.

The basics: - Distance: Approximately 6 km one-way (12 km return, or arrange a taxi back from Altea) - Elevation gain: Rolling, with some short sharp climbs - Time: 3–4 hours one way - Difficulty: Moderate - Start point: Take the road towards Urbanización La Canuta from Calpe — there's parking near the start of the trail

The path hugs the cliff edge most of the way, with the Mediterranean impossibly blue below you. You'll pass sea caves, ruined watchtowers, and almond groves. Take a packed lunch and stop somewhere with a view — there are plenty of spots to sit on a rock and eat it properly.

Do this one in the morning in June. By 1pm it's exposed and very warm.

Barranco de la Encantada: A Hidden Valley Walk

Fewer than 10 minutes' drive from Calpe's centre, the Barranco de la Encantada (Valley of the Enchanted) is a short but lovely dry river-valley walk through almond and carob trees. It's cool even in summer thanks to the shade, and it feels a world away from the beach crowds.

  • Distance: 4 km return
  • Time: 1.5 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy

This one is great if you want a gentle walk with young children or elderly family members. The path is relatively well-marked and there's a small ermita (chapel) at the end of the valley worth visiting.

What to Wear & When to Go

In June, the golden rule is: start early and finish by noon. Trails in full sun between 12pm and 5pm are genuinely uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. Here's what I always take:

  • Lightweight, breathable hiking clothes
  • Sun hat and high-factor sun cream
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person (more for the Peñón)
  • Snacks — there are no cafes on any of these trails
  • A light layer for the Peñón summit, which can be breezy
  • Solid footwear — trainers are fine for the Salinas walk, but the Peñón and Caminito del Toix need proper grip

Where to Stay for Hiking in Calpe

For hikers, location matters. You want somewhere close enough to the Peñón to make that early start easy, with space to dry sweaty gear and a kitchen to prepare your own food and lunches.

Our holiday rentals in Calpe are all hand-picked for quality and location. Booking direct through JV Properties saves you up to 18% compared to booking through Airbnb or Booking.com — that's a significant saving that could pay for a very good seafood lunch at the port.

We have apartments and villas across Calpe from beachfront on Playa de la Fossa to hillside properties with unbeatable views of the Peñón itself.
