If you're looking for a romantic destination in Spain that doesn't involve fighting through tourist crowds or paying over the odds for a sunset cocktail, Altea for couples is quietly one of the best-kept secrets on the entire Mediterranean coast. I've lived here for ten years and I still get that chest-tightening feeling when I walk up through the cobbled lanes of the old town in the early evening, jasmine hanging overhead, the blue dome of the church catching the last of the light. It never gets old.
June is honestly one of the finest months to be here as a couple. The summer crowds haven't fully arrived yet, the sea is warm enough to swim properly, and there's a golden-hour light that photographers travel across Europe to capture. Here's everything you need to plan a genuinely romantic break in Altea.
Wander the Old Town at Dusk — and Don't Rush It
Altea's Casc Antic (old town) is the obvious starting point, and yes, everyone says it — but they're right. The difference between a tourist passing through and someone who actually falls in love with this place is time. Give yourself a whole evening up here, not just an hour.

Find rentals →Start at the base of the hill around 7pm, pick up a glass of local white wine from the terrace at La Capella (a converted chapel with extraordinary views across the bay), then wind your way up through the whitewashed streets. The Plaza de la Iglesia at the top, with its iconic blue-and-white tiled church dome, is best around 8:30pm in June when the light turns amber and most of the day-trippers have gone home. Bring a camera. Sit on the church steps. Talk.
Watch the Sunset from the Esplanade — With a Twist
The seafront esplanade at Altea, El Passeig de la Mar, is lovely for an evening stroll — but the real couples' tip is to keep walking north past the main strip until you reach the quieter rocky section near Racó de l'Oix. There's almost no one there after 8pm, the light on the Peñón de Ifach (Calpe's famous rock, visible on the horizon) turns extraordinary shades of pink and orange, and you can sit on the smooth limestone with your feet dangling over the water. It's completely free and completely magic.
If you prefer your sunset with service, La Costera restaurant on the seafront has one of the better terraces — ask for a table on the outside edge and book at least two days ahead in June.
Take a Private Boat Trip Along the Coast
This is the one thing I recommend to every couple I know visiting Altea and it never disappoints. Several small operators run private half-day boat charters out of the marina at Altea or the neighbouring port of l'Albir. For around €250-350 you get a boat to yourselves, usually with snorkelling gear, a small cooler for wine and food, and access to coves that you simply cannot reach by land.
The stretch of coast between Altea and Cala Baladrar (near Benissa) is particularly beautiful — calm, clear turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs, and almost no other boats mid-week in June. Ask the skipper to stop at Cala del Metge if conditions allow. It's a tiny hidden cove that feels like it was designed specifically for two people with a bottle of Albariño.
Dinner at Bon Amb (or Its More Accessible Cousins)
The coast around Altea punches well above its weight for serious food. Bon Amb in Jávea (about 40 minutes by car) holds two Michelin stars and is one of the finest restaurants in the Valencia region — if you're celebrating something significant, it's worth it. Book months in advance.
Closer to home, El Peix i la Mar in Altea port does exceptional fresh fish and seafood in a genuinely romantic setting without the eye-watering price tag. Order the gamba roja (red prawn) from Dénia — it's the best prawn in Spain and you're close enough to the source that it's caught that morning. Sit outside, order a bottle of local Mascarat rosé, and take your time.
For something more intimate and inland, Restaurante Oustau de Altea in the old town has candlelit tables on a terrace that feels like a secret garden. It's tiny (about eight tables), so book ahead.
Couples' Spa and Wellness
The Hotel Oliva Nova and several boutique hotels in the area offer day-pass spa access for non-guests, which is ideal if you're renting a private apartment. But honestly, my favourite local option for couples is the baños árabes (Arab baths) experience at Hammam Al Ándalus in Benidorm — about 20 minutes from Altea. Yes, it says Benidorm, but this is not the Benidorm you're imagining. The baths are housed in an elegant building, the hot and cold pools are genuinely relaxing, and the couples' massage packages are excellent value at around €80-100 per person including entry.
Stay in a Private Villa or Apartment — and Save Money Doing It
For a romantic break, nothing beats having your own space — a private terrace, a kitchen to cook breakfast together, the freedom to come and go without hotel schedules. Holiday rentals in Altea range from chic studio apartments in the old town to full villas with private pools in the hills above town, and the views from the elevated properties are genuinely something else.
When you browse available properties, you'll find options to suit every budget. And here's the thing most people don't know: booking directly through JV Properties saves you up to 18% compared to Airbnb — that's money you can spend on a boat trip, a Michelin-starred dinner, or another bottle of gamba roja and local wine. Direct booking also means you deal with real people who know these properties and this area inside out.
Practical Tips for Couples Visiting Altea in June
Getting around: Rent a small car. Altea's old town is pedestrianised and some of the best viewpoints and restaurants are scattered along the coast. The N-332 coastal road is beautiful and easy to drive.
Where to stay: For romance, aim for properties in or close to the old town (for walkability and atmosphere) or elevated hillside villas with sea views. Avoid the main beach strip if atmosphere matters to you.
Costs: June is still shoulder season compared to July-August, so prices are noticeably lower and availability better. A good dinner for two with wine runs €60-90 at a decent restaurant. The boat charter is the big spend but genuinely worth it.
Language: A few words of Spanish go a long way in Altea. The town is less internationally touristy than Calpe or Benidorm — locals genuinely appreciate the effort.
Altea doesn't try to be romantic. It just is. Come with someone you love, leave the agenda loose, and let the place do its thing.
