The Playa de Levante stretches nearly 2 kilometres with fine golden sand, and in peak summer it's absolutely heaving — sun loungers back to back, water sports, chiringuitos, the works. If your holiday happiness depends on buzzy beach energy and golden sand, Benidorm wins on that single criterion.

Albir's beach is Blue Flag pebble — smaller, quieter, and backed by the famous lighthouse walk into the nature reserve. It never feels overcrowded, even in August, partly because holiday-makers self-select (people who want a party beach don't tend to book Albir). I genuinely prefer it. Bring water shoes and a good book. The water clarity here is stunning.

Benidorm is dominated by large hotels, many of which are all-inclusive. That suits some travellers perfectly. Guadalest is 35 minutes. Albir is an exceptional base for exploring the region — and in September, when the summer crowds thin and the light turns golden, it's at its absolute best.
