If you're planning a holiday on the Costa Blanca and you've been Googling between Albir and Benidorm, you're not alone. These two resorts sit just 8 kilometres apart — you can literally see Benidorm's famous skyline from Albir's promenade — yet they offer completely different holiday experiences. I've lived here for ten years, and I get asked this question constantly. So let me give you an honest, local's answer.
The Vibe: Calm Village vs. Party City
Let's get the obvious one out of the way first. Benidorm is big, loud, and proud of it. The British-dominated strip along Levante Beach, the foam parties, the karaoke bars open until 5am — it's a full-throttle resort town that genuinely delivers on its promise of non-stop entertainment. If that's your thing, it really is one of the best package-holiday destinations in Europe.
Albir is something else entirely. It's a small, predominantly residential village that happens to have a gorgeous Blue Flag beach, a world-class natural park on its doorstep (the Sierra Helada), and a genuinely good restaurant scene along its pedestrianised main street, Avenida de L'Albir. There's no strip, no karaoke, and you won't find a foam party anywhere. What you will find is cold beer on a quiet terrace, the smell of orange blossom in the evenings, and a promenade where people actually stroll rather than stumble.

Find rentals →In June, which is right now, Albir is particularly special. The crowds of July and August haven't arrived yet, the sea temperature has just crossed that magical 22°C threshold, and the Sierra Helada trails are still green from the spring rains. Benidorm, meanwhile, is already ramping up towards peak season — the Levante strip gets noticeably busier from mid-June onwards.
The Beach: Pebbles vs. Sand
This is a real practical difference worth knowing before you book. Benidorm has two sweeping sandy beaches — Levante and Poniente — both genuinely beautiful and both backed by the resort's famous high-rise hotels. The sand is fine, the water is clear, and the beach infrastructure (sun loungers, showers, chiringuito bars) is excellent.
Albir's Playa del Albir is a pebble beach. I know, I know — but before you immediately click away to Benidorm, hear me out. Those pebbles mean the water clarity here is extraordinary. There's no sand cloud when you wade in, and the snorkelling along the northern end of the bay, where the rocks of the Sierra Helada meet the sea, is among the best I've found anywhere on this coast. The beach is also noticeably less crowded than either of Benidorm's sandy stretches, even in high summer. Bring beach shoes, obviously.
Getting Between the Two
Here's something most visitors don't realise: you don't have to choose. The TRAM, the coastal light railway, connects Albir (stop: L'Albir) with Benidorm in about 12 minutes for under €2. This means you can stay in the peace and quiet of Albir, sleep well, eat well, and then hop on the tram whenever you fancy a day in Benidorm — theme parks, Terra Mítica, the old town, the beach. Then come home to Albir in the evening. Best of both worlds.
The TRAM runs frequently throughout the day, and I'd genuinely recommend this approach to anyone who wants the full Costa Blanca experience without sacrificing a good night's sleep.
Accommodation: Hotels vs. Holiday Rentals
Benidorm's accommodation scene is dominated by large hotels, many of them all-inclusive. That works brilliantly for a certain kind of holiday — you know exactly what you're getting, the entertainment is laid on, and you never have to think about where to eat.
Albir's accommodation is predominantly holiday rentals and apartments, many of them owner-managed and booked direct. This suits families and couples who want space, a kitchen for breakfasts and lunches, and the freedom to come and go without resort timetables. A holiday rental in Albir typically comes with a private terrace or communal pool, air conditioning (essential by June), and the ability to self-cater — which makes a genuine difference to your holiday budget.
One important tip: booking direct saves you up to 18% compared to booking through Airbnb or Booking.com. Those platforms charge significant fees to both hosts and guests. When you book direct with JV Properties, that money stays in your pocket. Worth knowing when you're comparing costs between an all-inclusive Benidorm hotel and a self-catering Albir apartment.
Eating Out: Touristy vs. Genuinely Local
Benidorm's restaurant scene has improved significantly in recent years, and the old town (Casco Antiguo) has some decent tapas bars and seafood restaurants around Plaza de la Constitución. But let's be honest — the main strips are dominated by full English breakfasts, fish and chips, and tourist menus that wouldn't win any awards.
Albir punches well above its weight for food. The stretch of restaurants along Avenida de L'Albir includes genuinely good Spanish cooking — I particularly like La Olla for rice dishes, and the terraza at El Xato de l'Alfàs is worth the short taxi ride to the neighbouring village. For a cold beer and good tapas at a sensible price, Bar La Guardia near the promenade is where the locals actually eat. You'll hear more Spanish and German than English, which is usually a good sign.
Who Should Choose Albir?
- Couples who want a relaxing, romantic base with good food, clear water, and easy access to the wider coast
- Families who want space, a pool, and a beach that's manageable for children (the water is calm and the bay is sheltered)
- Hikers and nature lovers — the Sierra Helada Natural Park is right there, and it's free
- Repeat visitors who already know Benidorm and want to try something different
- Anyone who values a good night's sleep — Albir is quiet after midnight
Who Should Choose Benidorm?
- Groups looking for nightlife, entertainment, and a classic British-style resort holiday
- Anyone who specifically wants a sandy beach within walking distance of their hotel
- Families who want the convenience and entertainment programme of a large hotel
- Theme park enthusiasts — Terra Mítica and Aqualandia are both based near Benidorm
My Honest Verdict After 10 Years
I live in Albir and I genuinely love it. But I also take the TRAM to Benidorm a few times each summer and enjoy it for what it is. They're not competitors — they're complements. If I had to advise someone booking their first Costa Blanca holiday, I'd say: stay in Albir, explore everything from there. You'll have a quieter base, better food, stunning nature on your doorstep, and Benidorm is literally 12 minutes away when you want it.
