Cycling in Albir has exploded in popularity over the past few years, and honestly, it's not hard to see why. I've been riding these roads and trails for a decade, and this stretch of the Costa Blanca offers something genuinely rare: flat promenade rides for beginners, serious mountain climbs for road cyclists, and coastal paths that make you want to pull over every five minutes just to stare at the sea.
June is, without question, one of the best months to get on a bike here. The temperatures are warm but haven't yet tipped into the brutal heat of July and August, the roads are busy but not chaotic, and the light in the early morning is — I'm going to sound like a travel cliché here — genuinely magical. Pack your kit and read on.
Why Albir Is a Cyclist's Paradise on the Costa Blanca
Albir sits between Altea and Benidorm in a way that gives cyclists remarkable options within a very short distance. To the south, you have the Benidorm seafront and its flat coastal road. To the north, the elegant promenade of Altea curves towards Calpe. And directly above the town, the Serra Gelada Natural Park offers one of the most dramatic coastal climbs on the entire Costa Blanca.

Find rentals →The town itself is flat and easy to navigate by bike. The seafront promenade — Paseo de la Repesa — runs along Playa del Albir and connects seamlessly to the Altea promenade, making for a relaxed, mostly traffic-free ride that takes about 20–25 minutes end to end. Perfect for a morning warm-up or a family outing with younger kids.
Albir also has a long tradition of welcoming road cyclists. You'll spot groups of club riders every morning between March and October, many of them regulars who base themselves here specifically because of the cycling. The local café culture supports it too — there are several spots along the main strip where a post-ride cortado and tostada con tomate feel like a birthright.
The 4 Best Cycling Routes from Albir
1. The Albir–Altea Promenade (Easy, 6 km round trip)
This is the one I recommend to anyone who hasn't cycled much, or who's on holiday with kids. Start at the southern end of Playa del Albir and ride the flat promenade north towards Altea. The path is wide, well-maintained, and lined with palm trees. In June, it's busy with walkers and runners in the morning, so keep your speed sensible. Once you reach Altea's lower promenade, lock up and grab breakfast at one of the beachside terraces — El Cano does a brilliant coffee and the views across the bay to the Peñón de Ifach are worth stopping for.
2. Albir to Calpe via the Coast Road (Intermediate, 40 km round trip)
This is my personal favourite for a half-day ride. Head north through Altea, pick up the N-332 briefly, and then drop down towards Calpe following the signs through La Fustera and Les Bassetes. The road winds along the coastline with the Peñón de Ifach getting bigger with every kilometre. Calpe's old town is worth a wander — lock the bikes and walk up through the Casco Antiguo before heading back. Allow 3–4 hours with stops. Some short sharp climbs around La Olla, but nothing technical.
3. The Serra Gelada Climb (Advanced, 15 km with serious elevation)
If you're a road cyclist who likes a proper climb, this is the one. From the centre of Albir, follow the signs up towards the Faro de l'Albir (the lighthouse). The road ascends steeply through the Serra Gelada Natural Park — the final stretch to the summit fire-road junction is roughly 8% average gradient. Views from the top are extraordinary: Benidorm's skyline to the south, Altea's white dome to the north, and the Mediterranean stretching out east. Come early in June — by 10am it's already warm up there with no shade.
4. Albir to Benidorm and Back (Easy–Intermediate, 20 km round trip)
Head south along the seafront towards Benidorm. The path runs along the beach and connects to the Playa de Poniente promenade. It's flat, scenic, and a completely different vibe from Albir — you'll go from a quiet beach town to the buzzing Benidorm seafront in about 30 minutes. Great for an evening ride when the light turns golden over the Benidorm skyline.
Where to Rent a Bike in Albir
There are a few reliable bike rental spots in and around Albir. Intersport Albir on Avenida L'Albir has a decent selection of city bikes, e-bikes, and mountain bikes. For road bikes (proper carbon frames, clip-in pedals), Bike Point Altea just up the road in Altea is more specialist and will fit you properly before you go. E-bikes are increasingly popular here for good reason — the Serra Gelada climb is considerably more enjoyable when you have a motor helping you up.
Expect to pay around €15–20 per day for a basic bike, €30–40 for an e-bike, and €50–70 for a quality road bike. Helmets are usually included; proper cycling shoes and pedals will cost a little extra.
Practical Tips for Cycling in Albir in June
Start early. I cannot stress this enough. June mornings are glorious — 18–20°C, low humidity, quiet roads. By 11am the temperature has climbed significantly. For longer routes, aim to be back by noon.
Sunscreen. Even with the breeze, the sun is intense. Arms, neck, the back of your hands — these are the spots people always miss.
Water. Carry more than you think you need. There are fountains along the Altea promenade and a bar at the lighthouse carpark, but between there and Calpe the options are limited.
Traffic. The N-332 coastal road has a dedicated cycle lane for much of its length, but it's still a busy road. Stay alert, especially through Altea town.
Lock up properly. Albir is a safe town, but don't leave an expensive hire bike unattended without a decent lock. Most rental shops provide one.
