If you're planning a holiday on the Costa Blanca and Playa del Albir isn't at the top of your list, let me change your mind right now. I've been living in Albir for nearly a decade, and this beach — tucked between the resort buzz of Benidorm and the old-town charm of Altea — is still one I walk to almost every morning in summer. That says everything.
This guide covers the beach itself, how to get there, where to park (the honest version), the best time to visit in May, and why staying in a holiday rental in Albir puts you within genuine walking distance of one of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca.
What Makes Playa del Albir Special?
Playa del Albir is a Blue Flag beach — it's won the award for years running — and the moment you arrive, you understand why. The pebbles are smooth and clean, the water is an almost ridiculous shade of turquoise, and the backdrop is the dramatic Sierra Helada natural park climbing steeply behind you. There are no tacky souvenir stalls. No jet ski operators revving engines twenty metres from swimmers. It genuinely feels like a beach that belongs to people who actually live here.

Find rentals →The beach stretches around 800 metres. It's not enormous, but it's never felt cramped to me — even in peak July. The absence of sand is the secret weapon: no sand in your bag, no sand in your food, no children crying because sand went in their eyes. Just clean smooth pebbles, crystal water, and that view.
Facilities on the Beach
The facilities are genuinely good. Sunbed and parasol hire is available from around €6–8 per sunbed per day — I'd recommend arriving before 10am in June and July if you want one in a prime spot. There are clean public toilets and showers, a couple of chiringuito beach bars (Restaurante La Caleta at the southern end is my personal favourite for a cold Estrella and fresh boquerones), and lifeguards on duty during summer season.
The beach is also fully accessible — there's a specially adapted walkway and a reserved section for wheelchair users, which is more than can be said for a lot of Spanish beaches.
Getting to Playa del Albir
On foot: If you're staying in Albir town centre — which you absolutely should be — the beach is a flat 10–15 minute walk along the seafront promenade. The Paseo de las Estrellas (Walk of the Stars) runs the full length and is genuinely lovely in the early morning or late evening. Check our Albir vacation rentals for properties close to the seafront.
By bus: The ALSA and local bus services connect Albir with Benidorm and Altea. The stop closest to the beach is on Avenida de la Marina. Useful if you're day-tripping from elsewhere.
By car: Here's the honest parking advice you won't always get. The car park directly adjacent to the beach (signposted from Avenida de la Marina) holds around 200 vehicles and fills up fast — I mean fast — on sunny weekends from late May onwards. In July and August, if you're not there by 9am, you're circling. There's paid street parking in the town centre about a 10-minute walk away that's usually manageable. My genuine advice? Stay in Albir and walk.
Visiting Albir Beach in May: Is It Worth It?
Absolutely yes — May might actually be the best month of the year to visit Playa del Albir. Water temperatures are around 19–21°C, which is perfectly swimmable for most people. The crowds are a fraction of July and August. You can get a sunbed without military-style planning. Restaurants have space. The Sierra Helada walking trail (accessed from the northern end of the beach — look for the small gate near the lighthouse path) is at its most spectacular with spring wildflowers.
Temperatures in Albir in late May typically hit 24–27°C during the day. Light evenings mean you can still be on the beach at 8pm in brilliant sunshine. This is genuinely one of the best times to be here.
Beyond the Beach: What's Nearby
The lighthouse at the end of the Sierra Helada headland is a 45-minute walk from the northern tip of the beach and offers some of the best views on the entire Costa Blanca — Benidorm's skyline to the south, Altea's white dome to the north. It's free, it's dramatic, and it makes for a perfect late-afternoon walk before dinner.
Altea old town is literally 3km up the coast. The white-washed streets, the ceramic-tiled church, the terrace restaurants looking out over the bay — it's worth an evening every time. And Benidorm is 7km in the other direction if you want waterparks, a bigger beach, or just the spectacle of Benidorm being Benidorm.
