After ten years of living here, I can honestly say this is one of the finest beaches on the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast — and it still flies surprisingly under the radar compared to its noisy neighbour, Benidorm. What Makes Playa del Albir Special?
Let's start with the obvious: the setting is stunning. Playa del Albir stretches for about 1.2 kilometres of grey-blue pebble shoreline, backed by a wide promenade lined with palm trees and anchored at one end by the dramatic cliffs of the Sierra Helada Natural Park. The water here is genuinely exceptional — crystal clear, intensely blue, and calm enough most days for confident swimmers and nervous ones alike. The Blue Flag has flown here for years, and deservedly so.
Now, I know what you're thinking: pebbles? Not for everyone, I get that. But there's a reason local Spanish families have been coming here for decades over the sandy beaches further along the coast. There's no sand blowing into your lunch, no grubby brown tideline, and the water visibility is outstanding — you can see your feet at two metres depth without trying. Pack a pair of aqua shoes if you're sensitive underfoot (you can buy them in the shops on Avenida del Albir for around €10) and you'll be absolutely fine.

September is, frankly, my favourite month on this beach. The summer crowds have thinned out noticeably — especially after the first week — but the sea is still a gloriously warm 26–27°C, warmer than it is in July because it's had all summer to heat up. The air temperature is a comfortable 28–30°C in the afternoon, compared to the punishing 35°C+ of August. You can actually walk the full length of the beach and the promenade without feeling like you're being grilled.
The chiringuitos (beach bars) are still open and buzzing through September, which matters — there's nothing worse than arriving at a beautiful beach and finding everything shut.
Practical Info: Facilities, Access & Parking
Getting to the beach: The main beach entrance is at the southern end of Avenida del Albir, the town's main commercial street. It's a flat, easy 5-minute walk from the town centre. If you're staying in an Albir holiday rental, chances are you're within 10 minutes on foot.
Parking: There's a large free car park (Parking Playa Albir) just off Calle Maigmó, a 3-minute walk from the beach. In July and August it fills up by 10am — in September you can usually find a spot comfortably until noon. Alternatively, park along Avenida de Bruselas and walk down.
Facilities on the beach: - Blue Flag status with regular water quality testing - Lifeguard service (seasonal — confirmed through September 30) - Accessible ramps and a dedicated accessible bathing area with a beach wheelchair available from the lifeguard post (free, just leave ID) - Public showers and changing areas at both ends of the beach - Sun lounger and parasol rental: around €12 for two loungers and a parasol per day - Pedalos available from the central beach station
Dogs: Officially not permitted on the main beach during summer season. There is a designated dog-friendly stretch near the northern end — local dog walkers know exactly where it is.
The Promenade: Albir's Secret Weapon
One thing that separates Playa del Albir from almost every other beach on the Costa Blanca is the promenade walk at the northern end. Once you've had your swim, you can walk directly from the beach onto the coastal path that leads into the Sierra Helada Natural Park. The first section — about 1.5km to the old lighthouse at Punta del Albir — is flat, paved, and genuinely one of the most scenic walks in the region. The views back across the bay to Benidorm's skyline are spectacular, especially in the late afternoon light.
If you want to extend it into a proper hike, there are routes up through the park from here. But honestly, even just the lighthouse walk and back before dinner is a perfect way to spend an afternoon in September when it's too warm for anything strenuous.
Where to Eat and Drink Near the Beach
Albir's beachfront restaurant scene is genuinely good — better than you'd expect for a small town.
Restaurante La Rocca sits right at the beach entrance and does an excellent fresh fish lunch. The arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish stock) is some of the best I've had on this coast — proper saffron-yellow, perfectly cooked. Order it for two and don't rush it.
Chiringuito Playa Albir is the beach bar par excellence — cold Estrella Damm, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and bocadillos that actually fill you up. They open from around 10am and it's where I go for breakfast on the beach when I'm feeling indulgent.
El Faro del Albir restaurant, slightly further up towards the promenade, has a terrace that catches the evening sun beautifully. It's a good spot for an early dinner in September — the kitchen opens at 7pm and you can watch the light change over the sea while you eat.
Snorkelling and Water Sports
The northern end of the beach, closest to the Sierra Helada cliffs, offers the best snorkelling on the Costa Blanca north of Calpe. The rocky outcrops shelter fish, sea urchins, and the occasional octopus. Bring your own mask and fins (you can rent from the beach equipment station), stay close to the rocks and go slowly — you'll see more than you expect.
For stand-up paddleboarding and kayak hire, there's a small water sports outfit operating from the central beach area. Kayaking around the base of the Sierra Helada cliffs is something I genuinely recommend — it's a completely different perspective on the park and the limestone formations are extraordinary up close.
